Japanning is a type of finish that originated as a European imitation of East Asian lacquer work. It was first used on furniture the word originated in the 17th century.
Excellent, rare, American walnut five-drawer lowboy, circa 1740. Japanning was done around 1820. 31-1/2″ high, 32-1/2″ wide, 21-1/2″ deep.
